How To Build A Raised Garden Bed In 6 Steps

30 November 2022

Have you been thinking about that beautifully landscaped garden but not sure where to start?

The Organic Garden Co specializes in steel-raised garden beds to suit any backyard. Whether you are looking for something small to plant some herbs or flowers or something a bit larger for fruit and vegetables, we have garden beds in various colours and sizes — you can mix and match to create a personalized garden to suit your outdoor space!

Wondering how to build a raised garden bed? It’s easy with Organic Garden Co! Follow these six simple steps on how to build raised garden beds for gardening and grow a thriving garden patch.

1. Find a suitable location for your garden bed

It’s important to keep in mind that some plants do not need direct sunlight. There are plants that thrive in cooler shady areas, out of direct sunlight. However, most plants do enjoy direct or indirect sunlight for a large portion of the day.

The wonderful thing about our raised garden beds is that they can be placed just about anywhere. They do not need to back up against a wall or fence, they can be a feature wherever you choose to set it up.

Make sure you do plenty of research beforehand on what you can grow in the space you have allocated to give it the best opportunity to flourish into a plentiful crop.

2. Prepare your garden bed area

Before putting together your garden boxes, it is important to check that there are no utilities buried below. It’s also a good idea to ensure that the area you plan to build your beds is flat.

Raised garden beds are generally placed on soil (free from weeds) but can also be placed directly on grass.

You may also want to dig a little deeper so that the bed sits in the soil a little rather than just on top.

Now you are ready to build your Organic Garden Co garden bed!

3. Assemble your raised garden bed

The Organic Garden Co makes assembling fast and easy. All of our garden beds come with SNAPTiTE posts that slide and click into position with little to no effort! The best part? No tools or screws are needed.*

Once you have assembled the panels and posts, simply pop on the caps to secure the corners in place – it's that easy!

Have a look at our videos to see how easy it is to assemble your planter bed!

*The extra high rectangle garden beds do require a drill, drill bit (supplied) and spanner, as it comes with a steel rod that gives the bed added strength.

4. Fill your Organic Garden Co bed

One of the many benefits of a raised garden bed is that it provides great drainage compared to in-ground garden beds and can help to keep weeds from the ground. You can also customize how you fill your beds based on your climate and what you plan to grow.

It’s a common misconception that your garden bed needs to be filled completely with only soil. Not only can this be very expensive, but it can create added pressure on your garden bed with compaction and inhibit water drainage. Plus, most herbs and vegies only require around 30cm of soil to thrive!

The best way to fill your garden box is to layer some organic matter first and build it up like lasagna.

Start by placing the cardboard box your garden beds come in as the first layer (remember to peel away any stickers and tape). Then you can layer in any logs, sticks and leaf matter from around your backyard.

Next, pour soil on top of your organic matter, ensuring you leave around 2 centimeters from the top for mulch. Make sure you use soil suited to your plants, and if needed, mix some fertiliser through the top portion, so your plants have the best start.

5. Plant your seeds or seedlings

It’s now time to plant! Before you start planting either your seeds or seedlings, it's best to research what you can plant together and how far apart to plant them.

Once you have planted your seeds, you can lightly water your soil before adding mulch. It’s a good idea to also water your garden after mulching so it doesn’t blow away.

6. Maintain your garden

Now that your garden is all ready, the most important thing is to ensure that you regularly water your plants depending on their needs. You may need to water more regularly when they are younger as their root systems don’t absorb as much water. However, it is a fine balance to ensure you aren’t overwatering!

From time to time, you may need to also put some fertiliser on your plants to replenish the nutrients and help with their growth.

Pruning, deadheading and trimming your plants will also help to ensure your crops stay healthy.

The best tip we can give is to ensure you do your research! Find out what works best for the climate you live in and the area you plan to place your garden bed in, and don’t forget to research what can be planted together. Happy gardening!
