How to grow broccoli from seed

Broccoli is a nutritious and tasty vegetable, but it often gets a bad rap from kids (and even some adults!). However, if they grow it themselves, they might be more willing to try it on their plate and reap the nutritional benefits.

Broccoli is a cool-season crop that’s best planted in early autumn in most parts of Australia. For the coldest areas, it’s a good idea to start a bit earlier. Although the growing season can be relatively short, the rewards are well worth it—growing broccoli plants can encourage kids to spend time outdoors, getting their hands dirty during the cooler months.

Plus, there’s nothing quite like the taste of a freshly harvested broccoli floret from your own garden—it’s sure to be fresher and tastier than anything you’ll find at the supermarket!

Want to learn how to grow broccoli from seed at home? Let’s dive in.

Health benefits of broccoli

steamed broccoli

Broccoli is a true superfood, packed with a wealth of nutritional benefits that are hard to beat. It’s loaded with vitamin C, essential for boosting and maintaining strong immune systems, especially for kids. It also provides a good dose of calcium, crucial for building and maintaining healthy bones.

On top of that, broccoli is high in fibre, which helps keep our digestive systems happy and running smoothly. But that’s not all—hidden inside each tiny broccoli floret is a powerful sulforaphane compound. This amazing substance has protective properties that can help guard us against serious chronic diseases.

So, when you add broccoli to your diet, you’re not just enjoying a delicious vegetable but also giving your body a supercharged dose of health-boosting nutrients!

How to grow broccoli from seed

growing broccoli

Growing broccoli is the best way to ensure you get the freshest and most nutritious produce. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just starting out, broccoli is a fantastic crop to grow, especially during the cooler months. You can have a thriving broccoli patch in no time with just a few simple materials and some easy-to-follow steps.

Here's everything you need to get started, including how to care for your broccoli plants to ensure a bountiful harvest.

What you’ll need

  • Broccoli seedlings or seeds: Start with seeds or ready-to-plant seedlings, depending on your preference.

  • Good quality potting mix: Essential for providing your broccoli with the nutrients it needs to grow strong and healthy.

  • Mulch: Helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

  • Water-filled watering can: To keep your broccoli well-hydrated.

  • Liquid seaweed concentrate: A natural fertiliser to boost your plants.

Instructions

  1. Choose the right spot: Pick a sunny location for your garden bed with at least six hours of sunlight daily. Broccoli loves the sun, and adequate sunlight is crucial for its growth.
  2. Prepare your garden bed: Fill the garden bed with a high-quality potting mix. This will ensure your broccoli has the best foundation for strong root development and nutrient absorption.
  3. Sow your broccoli seeds: If starting from seeds, plant them in starter pots or seed trays. Keep them until three to four weeks old, then transplant them into your garden or raised garden bed. If you’re using seedlings, you can plant them directly in the garden bed. Be sure to space each plant about 25cm apart to give them room to grow.
  4. Mulch and water: Cover the soil around your seedlings with mulch, like pea straw. This helps retain moisture and keeps the soil temperature stable. After mulching, give the seedlings a light watering.
  5. Regular care: Water your broccoli regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Feed your plants with a liquid seaweed concentrate every two weeks to promote healthy growth.
  6. Harvest time: Harvest broccoli when the heads are about 10-12cm in diameter. Use a sharp knife to cut the head off the plant, and leave some stem attached.
  7. Pest watch: Watch for common pests like caterpillars and the cabbage moth. These insects can quickly damage your broccoli, so check your plants regularly and take action if you spot any.

Bonus recipe: Aunty Steph’s Kid-Approved Lemon Broccoli Pasta

broccoli pasta

Here's a recipe that turns broccoli into a dish even the pickiest eaters will love. It’s a simple and tasty way for your little green thumbs to enjoy the fruits (or, in this case, veggies) of their labour. This pasta combines the bright, fresh flavours of lemon and garlic with the crunch of toasted pinenuts, making it a surefire hit at the dinner table.

Plus, any leftovers make for a nutritious addition to school lunch boxes!

Ingredients

  • Fresh broccoli chopped into florets
  • 1 packet of your favourite pasta
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup toasted pinenuts
  • Olive oil
  • Fresh parmesan cheese
  • Salt
  • Pepper to taste.

Method

  1. Bring a large saucepan of water with a dash of salt to the boil. Cook your pasta as directed and throw in broccoli at the last minute. We like our broccoli with a little crunch.
  2. Strain and set aside.
  3. In the meantime, heat olive oil in a pan and add garlic and lemon zest. Cook for 1 minute. Then mix with lemon juice in a small bowl.
  4. Pour lemony mixture over pasta and broccoli.
  5. Divide into four bowls and top with toasted pinenuts, cheese, and pepper to taste.
  6. Any leftovers can be added to school lunch boxes.
